Superstar could be headed to the Phillies

Rumors are flying around Philadelphia.

Some are not so good. With the recent struggles of the Eagles, fans are calling for the head of coach Andy Reid. Of coarse, nothing will happen there. The Flyers are off to a horriffic start and unless something changes soon, dramatic changes are soon to come.

But wait, there is something to be excited about in Philadelphia, and that is the rumor that has the Phillies persuing free agent slugger Alfonso Soriano.

Having one of the best players in baseball batting behind the best player
this past season, Ryan Howard, blows my mind.

Imagine being on the mound and having to face Chase Utley, Howard, and then Soriano. Not to mention Jimmy Rollins, Aaron Rowand, and Shane Victorino. Now that is a scary though.

Imagine a lineup that looked like this: Rollins (SS), Victorino (RF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Soriano (LF), Rowand (CF), and then the seven and eight hitters being whoever plays third base and catches. This is not to mention I left out Pat Burrell, whom the Phillies are trying to trade) and Jeff Conine.

Not too shabby.

Of coarse, there are options with that lineup as well. Soriano can steal bases and has batted leadoff in the past. Burrell could be inserted in the lineup to play left. Conine is no slouch either.

However, as the Yankees proved this past season, you still need pitching to win.

So while getting Soriano would excite me beyond belief, the Phillies need to sure up their rotation and bullpen.

The starting five could look something like this, assuming they resign Randy Wolf: Brett Myers, Cole Hammels, Jamie Moyer, Lon Leiber, Randy Wolf. But their are some intriguing free agents out there such as Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt, although their names have not been linked to the Phillies.

The most glaring needs could be finding a setup man and third baseman.

But I can't help bu hope for the superstar in Soriano to be wearing a Phillies uniform next year. That would bring excitement to the town like T.O. did when the Eagles traded for him.

With the Eagles and Flyers in a downward spiral, I need something to be excited about.
